Pepsi Service Scholars Senior Prom

Linda Moody, the director for the Center for Civic Engagement teaches several classes on campus. One of those classes is ALEC 165 better known as Pepsi Service Scholars. Pepsi is a honorary service class for incoming Nebraska freshmen. They are picked based off of their service activities in high school. Every year the class puts on a prom for older adults and this year was a great success! Although there were not as many attendees this year, they still enjoyed themselves a lot. It is much like a high school prom with a little more food and different music. A local band called Fine Wine played polka and more classic songs for most of the event, but the Pepsi students were able to share some songs from there generation as well such as the Cupid Shuffle and NSYNC. The older adults got to dance the afternoon away with the Pespi students enjoying food, cake, and fellowship. It was great to see all of the faces of the older adults light up during the event and continually promise they will return the next year. The students had a blast as well with many of them commenting on how great the event was, how much fun it was spending time with older adults, and how much fun they had dancing with some of the older adults. This event helped the students realize how creative one can be when doing service as well as how important it is to bridge the generation gap to gain a new perspective.

Upcoming events: Dare to Care

Want to participate in a city wide food drive? Volunteer for Dare to Care as a group or an individual. There are two ways to volunteer to gather food. Check out this document for more information.

Civic Engagement Certificate

Exciting news, the Civic Engagement Certificate was approved by the Board of Regents! This allows students to connect civic engagement to their education and have it count towards your degree. If interested come into the office in 222 City Union and get more information. If well planned, the certificate can be completed by using all ACE courses, which are required for students anyway. It can be impressive for employers and show them how well connected you are with civic needs and other aspects of communities like diversity and serving among others. We are anxiously awaiting the Nebraska Coordinating Commission for Post-Secondary Education's approval before recruiting our first class at the beginning of Spring Semester 2012. Check out the requirements by looking at the sheet.
